How is Man-of-War Unique?

The Man-of-War Team is not just another swim team. Man-of-War is a family-centered team, coached by Tom Schmidt, who gives personal attention to all swimmers. Age and ability are not factors in determining who receives instruction and encouragement at this team. Each swimmer's potential is developed. This team is not run by a city or institution, but by a parent-operated, private, not-for-profit organization with a volunteer Board of Directors. The swimmers' parents compose the general membership and assist the Board of Directors in raising funds, sponsoring swim meets, and planning social events. The swimmers will be actively involved in Man-of-War. This team has a friendly, close-knit atmosphere in which all of the swimmers and their families are equally committed to the sport of swimming.

Swimmers compete against other swimmers of their own age and ability level. There are no "benchwarmers"! All swimmers participate. The Man-of-War swim program aspires to provide a challenging and stimulating team atmosphere where any swimmer, regardless of ability, can benefit from the social rewards of participating on a team as well as experiencing the competitive rewards of setting and achieving goals. It is our intent to provide every possible opportunity of reach swimmer to achieve maximum success. Man-of-War offers a year-round program with emphasis on competition with oneself through:
• improvement in technique
• physical conditioning
• quality training

USA Swimming is the national governing body of competitive swimming and is a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee. USA Swimming is a nationwide oragnization with 250,000 athletes and 20,000 non-athlete members. Man-of-War swimmers join USA Swimming through our South Carolina Local Swimming Committee.

USA Swimming has established the following age group categories of competition:
